BIOGRAPHY

Matt Levinstein is a NYC/Boston based Music Director, Conductor, Multi-Instrumentalist, Orchestrator, Copyist, Keyboard Programmer, & Educator. He is a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he was a Piano principle, and Professional Music major, with concentrations in Music Direction/Conducting for Musical Theater, Arranging/Orchestration, and Music Education.

Matt is comfortable in a variety of genres/styles, but specializes in Musical Theater. At Berklee, Matt has studied under veteran Broadway Music Director, Eric Stern, in courses such as “Advanced Conducting Skills for Theater”, “Theatre Music Direction”, “Coaching Theatre Vocalists", “Musical Theatre Keyboard Skills”, and more. He has also studied arranging/orchestration under Jeri Sykes, Winnie Dahlgren, and Brain Landrus. Many of his arrangements and orchestrations have been preformed live and professionally recorded. He is also highly profeciant in a number of Music Softwares, including Finale, Dorico, Mainstage 3, and Logic Pro X.

Throughout his academic career, he worked on a number of different productions. Recently, Matt was the Music Director for Berklee’s Broadway Band, a student run 14-Piece Orchestra, preforming a cabaret-style performance, featuring the work of student musicians, singers, orchestrators, copyists, and board. In previous semesters, Matt also served as an Orchestrator and copyist for the Broadway Band. He also collaborated with local colleges in the area, Music Directing and Piano/Conducting Falsettos, and You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown with Emerson College’s Musical Theatre Society, and playing for productions of Rent, Something Rotten, and Suessical, at Boston University. and the Pianist for Berklee’s Musical Theatre Orchestra in the Spring 2021 Semester.

Matt also has significant professional theater experience. Recently, Matt served as the Music Direction Apprentice at Theatre Aspen. In this role, he has had the opportunity to work alongside many Broadway/Touring production teams, including Music Directors' Alan Plado, Jared Stein, and Patrick Brady. At Theatre Aspen, Matt has been serving as AMD/Keys 2 for Beautiful, AMD/Keys 2/Gtr 2 for RENT, AMD/Piano/Gtr for three Brunch/Dinner Cabarets, and MD for multiple private/informal performances. Matt has played in countless pits across the Greater Boston Area, including Wheelock Family Theatre, NCCA at Jean’s Playhouse, The Footlight Club, and more. He also works as a freelance accompanist.

Matt recently made his NYC Music Direction debut in Cut! @ Green Room 42, a cabaret which celebrated songs that were cut from your favorite musiclas. This past summer, he made his Regional Music Direction debut, at the Mac-Haydn Theatre in Chatham, NY, where he Music Directed and Conducted their Summer 2024 productions of Sister Act, All Shook Upm and ShowStoppers. At the Mac-Haydn theatre, Matt will also be the Associate MD on their Summer 2024 productions of West Side Story, RENT, and Something Rotten. Next up, he will be the AMD/Keys 2/Sub Conductor for Scrooge! at the Arizona Theatre Company.

Matt loves finding ways to combine his passion for musical theater with his passion for education, for example, his work Open Fields Theater, Brave Arts Theater Workshop, and Star2B. Matt was the Music Director and Keyboard II/Conductor for Matilda the Musical at Open Fields Theater, and Music Directed various Revues with Open Fields and Brave Arts Theatre Workshop.

Matt has a Passion for new works, and loves being a part of them, whether it be as Music Director, Orchestrator, Copyist, and more. Recently he was the Music Director/Pianist for Finding Aaron, a new musical comedy by composer Kris Maloy, which was recently performed at the Chain Theatre in NYC, as apart of the Spark Theatre Festival. He recently was the Co-Music Director/Co-Orchestrator for Berklee Theatre For Young Audiences production of Pinocchio. He also was a Music Director and Orchestrator for Berklee’s Curtain Up!, an Original Musical Theater Concert, featuring new works by Berklee Students. This concert is a huge collaboration between many Berklee students, classes, and faculty members, where Matt conducted selected numbers with the 17-Piece orchestra.
